About the Museum
Established 1979
Lydd Town Museum is a local heritage museum - it is curated and managed by the Friends of Lydd, a registered charity, established in 1979. Entrance to the museum is free but as a charity we do always welcome donations.
As a heritage museum our aim & purpose is to share knowledge & information about the historic town of Lydd and the surrounding areas. We are a small but mighty museum, run by our amazing team of dedicated volunteers, who work tirelessly to maintain & improve the museum as well as staffing it for our open days throughout the year.
As a charity we're entirely dependent on donations to keep the museum open and to cover our running costs. Every penny donated goes towards the upkeep, maintenance and day to day running of the Museum. You can donate in person when you visit the museum or by clicking on the Donate Now button here on the website.

Visits by Special Arrangement
If you are making a visit to the area outside of our scheduled opening days or if you represent a group, organisation or company who would like to visit the museum, we are happy to arrange special open days and visits for a small donation to our charity.
Please contact the museum by email to arrange this - we will always do our best to facilitate special requests.
Use the 'Contact us' button below to send us an email.
Inside the Museum
Our exhibits are regularly updated - so even if you've visited us before, don't assume you've seen it all. We love to see return visitors (as well as welcoming new visitors) and we're confident you will find something new each time you visit us.
For the younger generations, we are a member of The Wheels of Time scheme and have quizzes available as well as badges to be collected. You can discover more about our participation in The Wheels of Time by scrolling down to the section dedicated to this, here on our website.
You can scroll through the gallery below to discover some of the items we have on display (either permanently or temporarily) here at the museum. Better yet, come and see us in person to see all of these exhibits and so much more.

Please make a Donation

Donate to the Museum
Please consider making a donation to Lydd Town Museum and help us to keep this wonderful heritage museum open and accessible for all.
Please Donate to our Fundraiser
THE 'OPEN & WARM' FUNDRAISER.
PLEASE HELP US TO HIT OUR £1000 TARGET.
In 2025 we started our first fundraiser. Our aim is to raise much needed funds towards the cost of installing a heating system at the Museum.
We have a number of historic (aka old!) and fragile documents, books and exhibits in the Museum and these should, ideally, be kept free from major temperature changes etc. At the moment, the Museum has no heating system (as anyone who has attended a meeting at the Museum, during winter, can attest to).
By installing a heating system in the Museum we will be able to better preserve all of our artefacts - it will also make for a much nicer environment for our Museum visitors (in the early part of the year especially). Ensuring a truly 'warm' welcome for all.

"What a lovely hidden little gem this is! My husband and I took 3 of our boys aged 11, 13 and 16 for a look around today and we thoroughly enjoyed ourselves. As we walked in we were greeted by a lovely bunch of volunteers, and one of them called Michel took the time to show us around. He was so friendly and informative and really knew his stuff! He went through each room and talked to us about the items there and let my younger two take the opportunity to sit on the bus and coach and have some photos taken. It would have been a lovely visit anyway, but having Michel as a 'tour-guide' really made it special so a big shout out to him!
The museum is run by volunteers and entrance is free, but you can leave a cash donation in the collection boxes or there is a QR code you can scan which takes you to their donation page. I really would recommend leaving a donation, it's a really worthy cause run by amazing volunteers!❤️ Thanks again Michel!"

"If you have had any family from this area or generally interested in the history of this tiny town, go visit this museum! My grandparents, father and uncles and aunts were raised here and we wanted to visit this town. This was the highlight, the volunteers were lovely and helped us find photos of our family. So much in there and so well preserved!"

"A wonderful insight of Lydd's past with very helpful volunteers. (Donations accepted gladly). Those born in Lydd will enjoy the nostalgia whilst others will be fascinated by the many artefacts on display including a horse drawn bus and Landau (used for the Lydd Day Queen). Look out for the shingle cart. Thank you for the interesting discussions."

Our Partnership with The Wheels of Time
We are proud to be a part of the Wheels of Time scheme. If you are visiting the Museum with children, please ask one of our volunteers for information on our participation in this scheme & be sure to claim a badge!
About The Wheels of Time
Wheels of Time is a non-profit community group with the purpose of promoting an interest in history and heritage among young children. This is achieved by running a scheme to encourage children, between the ages of 5 and 11, to visit museums and heritage sites.
The scheme was initially established in Kent in 2015, being run by a core team of volunteers (and still is). The Scheme received interest from museums and heritage venues outside of Kent, and so with a grant from the Arts Council England in 2021, was able to expand to other areas.
It ran a pilot Scheme in Dorset in 2022, and after lots of careful review and consideration throughout 2023, relaunched with other areas in 2024.
Children participating in Wheels of Time have fun exploring participating museums & heritage venues following Roamin’ Rex’s map. They collect a badge individual to each venue.
They can claim Roamin’ Rex’s award badges for a particular area and for visiting 10, 20, 30 or 40 Wheels of Time venues in an area. There is also a special Award Badge for visiting all venues in an area
There is no charge to children participating in Wheels of Time, but the normal entry fees at the venues are payable. Some venues are free entry but ask that visitors make a donation.
You can discover more about The Wheels of Time scheme by clicking on the 'learn more' link to visit their website
The website also provides details of all museums and heritage sites (including Lydd Town Museum) who are participating in the scheme
This website was built thanks to a grant recieved from Lydd Town Council via their Small Grants process - Lydd Town Museum gratefully acknowledges the support we received.
